I just found out about a really cool application that allows you to send free postcards, with your own pictures.  It’s called Hippopost, and I’ve used it to send postcards to my parents and my wife.  The postcards are free, and the folks at Hippopost can do this because they put a small advertisement on the back of your postcard (see the image of my postcard below).

From what I can tell, you can send 1,000s of postcards (one at a time) with Hippopost, so if you have a really nice picture of the family and want to just say “Hi,” or want to save a little bit of money on some holiday cards, Hippopost is a great way to send a really nice postcard.

Here’s a postcard I sent my wife to test out Hippopost (by the way… the quality of the scan isn’t great, but the postcard quality is excellent!):

As it turns out, there are three different ways you can send Hippopost postcards:

1. With a mobile smartphone (like a BlackBerry )
2. With your Facebook account
3. Or online at their website – www.hippopost.com

There appears to be a limit of two postcards a day, but it’s still a great way of getting out a very unique postcard to someone you love.  Here are some unique ways you could use Hippopost:

• Scan some of your children’s artwork and send it to the grandparents
• Take pictures on vacation and send a family photo postcard while you’re still away
• Create a party invite with a photo and some text (use Paint or another image editing software to add text) and send the invites out, two at a time
• Quick updates to friends and family who live in other parts of the country
• A quick note to tell your children you love them – kids love getting mail!

Check them out and have fun sending postcards.  Nothing beats a special note for keeping in touch.
